The best books on Islam (for those in the West) are "Easily Understand Islam" and "The Koran for Dummies" (despite it's title a good book).

The video "The Message" may also help explain the life and times of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). You can even read about the stories of converts (e.g. reverts) in "Why new Muslims converted to Islam" and "Stories of people coming to Islam". Read about stories of reverts from around the world. , or also priests converting to islam . The autobiography of Malcolm X,  The Bible, Quran and Science  , and Ahmed Deedat’s video ( "Is the Bible the word of God?" ), and of course, most importantly the  Quran  itself are examples of things that are mentioned. Dr. Zakir Naik’s video (Quran and Modern Science (video)) is another resource. This can also be viewed on Islamic internet television at Cyber TV at Islamicity .

The fact that most religious books cannot be traced back to their exact wording and origins has been a major source of problems for the adherents of these religions. However, Islam is the only major religion that can conclusively state that it's Holy book, the Quran (The Word of God), has been completely preserved since the moment it was revealed to Prophet Muhammad(saws) by God through archangel Gabriel over 1400 years ago. And nearest among them in love to the believers wilt thou find those who say, "We are Christians": because amongst these are men devoted to learning and men who have renounced the world, and they are not arrogant. And when they listen to the revelation received by the Messenger, thou wilt see their eyes overflowing with tears, for they recognise the truth: they pray: "Our Lord! we believe; write us down among the witnesses. "What cause can we have not to believe in Allah and the truth which has come to us, seeing that we long for our Lord to admit us to the company of the righteous?"
